*The explanation below contains details about the creation and use of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs). If you have any questions on this explanation or want to know what your results mean, please contact your clinician.

Hypoparathyroid Patient Questionnaire (HPQ‑28) Tool

The HPQ‑28 was developed in 2019 by a group of German clinicians led by Prof. Dr. Heide Siggelkow. It is designed to assess the quality of life of people living with hypoparathyroidism, regardless of the underlying cause.

Hypoparathyroidism is an endocrine condition in which the level of calcium in the blood becomes too low because the body does not produce enough parathyroid hormone (PTH). In most cases, this happens when the parathyroid glands are damaged or removed during thyroid or other neck surgery. Less commonly, hypoparathyroidism can be caused by autoimmune processes or genetic factors.

The questionnaire contains 28 questions grouped into five main areas of symptoms:

  • Pain and cramps
  • Neurovegetative symptoms (such as tingling or numbness)
  • Loss of vitality
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms

Because symptoms can vary widely from person to person, the HPQ‑28 helps your care team understand your individual experience more accurately and follow changes over time.

At the moment, the questionnaire is available in English and German, and we are continuously working on adding more languages.

How your results are used

Your answers help us understand your wellbeing in a more complete way. There are no “right” or “wrong” answers. The results simply show which symptoms may be affecting you the most and whether anything has changed since your last assessment.

You can read more about the development and validation of the HPQ‑28 here.

If you are unsure how to interpret your results, please contact your doctor for guidance.
